The Russo-Ukrainian war has reignited old debates on the right to wage war (ius ad bellum) as well as on the rules to abide by in armed conflict (ius in bello) and their ramifications in international criminal law. However, the chasm between debates on the laws of war and the lived experience of it have once again been revealed. The two must be reconnected by restoring war’s historical connections with political violence. There is much at stake here.
