Ozone is an urban air pollutant, known to cause lung injury and altered function. Using established models of acute (0.8 ppm, 3 h) and episodic (1.5 ppm, 2 h, 2 times/wk, 6 wk) inhalation exposure, we observed distinct structural changes in the lung; whereas acutely, ozone primarily disrupts the bronchiolar epithelial barrier, episodic exposure causes airway remodeling. Herein we examined how these responses altered pulmonary function.

ResultsAmong 96,506 enrolled, the median age was 51.59 (IQR, 43.46–58.81) years and 76,755 (79.53%) individuals were men. The median level of the TyG index was 8.57 (IQR, 8.18–9.05). Using an outcome-oriented method to maximize log-rank statistics, the optimal cutoff point of the TyG index associated with incident CVD was 8.81 (Figure S2). A total of 34,953 (36.22%) participants had a high TyG index. Baseline characteristics between participants with low and high TyG index are summarized in Table 1.

Within the diverse carnivore guilds of eastern and southern Africa, Black-backed Jackal (Lupulella mesomelas) populations are stable and thriving, unlike hundreds of mammal species in Africa that are adversely affected by human-mediated habitat loss and hunting. Population stability may be due to the extremely broad diet of the Black-backed Jackal or behavioral flexibility allowing dietary shifts to more prevalent resources.
