Hong Kong’s economy expanded by 3.1 per cent year on year in the first quarter of 2025, according to advance government estimates. Figures released by the Census and Statistics Department on Friday showed gross domestic product (GDP) increased by an estimated 3.1 per cent in real terms in the first three months. A government spokesman said the economy “expanded solidly” in the three months, “picking up from the 2.5 per cent growth in the preceding quarter”.

Calls are mounting for mainland Chinese drivers to be required to sit tests in Hong Kong to get their driving qualifications recognised in the city, with official figures recording a sharp rise in applications for local licences in recent years. Data prepared by the Transport Department for legislators showed that the number of direct issue applications based on mainland driving licences jumped from 20,306 in 2022 to 57,913 in 2023, a rise of 185 per cent.
