New revelations about psychosis come to me all the time. Just recently, I’ve been considering the role of my brief stint as a part-time pro-domme on my eventual psychotic break. But more than fifteen years since I first brandished a crop, I am still extremely nervous about writing anything negative about the paid BDSM experiences I had. Sex workers of all stripes are broadly given a terrible time. Most people are revolted and entranced with us simultaneously.

In 2013, at the age of 30, I was in crisis. My father had died suddenly, just before my 30th birthday, leaving me without immediate family in the UK. I had been living alone between a shabby flat in London and a rented basement in Los Angeles in an effort to maintain a pitiful long-distance “relationship” that barely merited that word to describe it, occasionally using other people’s ADHD drugs to cope with the constant jet lag.
