When I’m not knocking on exam-room doors as a pediatrician in New York City, I’m knocking on voters’ doors in Northampton, Pennsylvania—a small county that could determine the outcome of this year’s nail-biting presidential election. Each time I walk up to a voter’s front door, my heartbeat quickens. You would think a doctor who talks to total strangers every day would be immune to such jitters. But even with a door-knocking or “canvas buddy” that the campaign pairs me with—I’m nervous.

I am now in the twilight of my psychiatric career. Yes, I can write that without wincing now, almost, well, maybe just a little. I have made decisions in the last twelve months that have changed my daily schedule, my work life, and my relationships profoundly. Everyone around me, including friends, family members, and even some of my coworkers, thought that I was retiring. It’s not working any longer. Quitting. Hanging up the spikes. Is the scene safe? This is the first thing that you, as a member of the National Ski Patrol, need to ask and assess when coming upon a scene. As a doctor, I can tell you: they do not teach you this in med school. When becoming a doctor, you learn how the body works as best we currently understand it. You study how substances affect the body, from illegal drugs to those we buy, in hopes of a better life. You learn how to fix broken bones, how to stitch someone back together.
