At the start of the clinic where I see patients with colorectal, stomach, pancreatic, and other gastrointestinal cancers, I remarked to a colleague, “Every new patient on my schedule is under 45.” She replied, “Three of mine are … this is too many young people with cancer.” We felt as though we were in the trenches and didn’t know where the bullets were coming from. While the rates of some types of cancer are declining, several gastrointestinal cancers are on the rise among people under age 50.

When the 2024 Formula 1 season begins this month, two Princeton alumni will be behind the scenes, finding new ways to push the limits of car racing: Stefano Chiazza *13 and Sarah Battat ’17. Both work for the MoneyGram Hass F1 team, Chiazza as the team’s aero performance group team leader and Battat as a junior aerodynamics engineer. The 2024 Formula 1 schedule goes from March through December this year with 24 races in 21 countries.

This year’s top honors at the Princeton Varsity Club senior awards banquet went to Daria Frayman ’23, the Von Kienbusch Award winner, who ranked as high as No. 1 nationally in singles while leading the women’s tennis team to four Ivy League titles and three NCAA Tournament second-round appearances, and Sondre Guttormsen ’23, the Roper Trophy winner, who set program and Ivy pole vaulting records, indoors and outdoors, and won three NCAA titles in his event.

Katherine Freese ’77, a physicist at the University of Texas, Austin, has proposed that dark matter wasn’t created in the Big Bang along with all other matter, but rather in a second Big Bang some weeks later. Freese, who was recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences and serves as director of the Weinberg Institute for Theoretical Physics, spoke with PAW about the Dark Big Bang theory and what it means for our understanding of the universe.
