The print by longtime New Jersey resident Willie Cole, upon first glance, displays an ironing board surrounded by a dozen irons of different shapes and sizes. On display at Montclair Art Museum, the 1997 piece — titled “Stowage” — caught the attention of Daniel Rogers as he moved through the museum’s newest exhibit, “Century: 100 Years of Black Art.”Rogers gazed in silence at what looked like household items, soon to realize it actually represented slave ships at sea.
