Canada had almost no population growth in the first quarter of 2025, adding just 20,107 more people, a decline driven mainly by having fewer international students and more natural deaths than births. As of April 1, Canada had 41,548,787 people, marking the smallest quarterly growth since the third quarter of 2020, when the population dropped by 1,232 people in the wake of border restrictions to slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Statistics Canada.

A single passenger survived the fiery crash of an Air India plane Thursday in India’s northwestern city of Ahmedabad, killing 241 people bound for London — and others on the ground — with a Toronto dentist on board, officials said. It was not immediately clear what may have caused one of India’s worst airline disasters in decades. A video of the crash shows the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner taking off with its nose pointed upward, then sinking toward the ground before slamming into a medical college.
