By the time Lolldaiga Hills fully recovers from the destruction of the 2021 fire that was started by British soldiers, most middle-aged residents of the area and locals who were directly affected would probably be long dead. Already, more than 50 locals have died from the effects of the fire, and an environmental assessment shows that Lolldaiga Hills will require the planting of more than 300,000 trees over 50 years to fully recover.

Had the events of November 7, 2015 gone differently, Lisoka Lesasuyan would probably be a proud moran today, chasing his dream of being a track and field athlete. But an encounter with an unexploded ordnance in Archer’s Post, Samburu County, left the herdsboy crippled. Lisoka was just 13 when he lost his arms and an eye in the explosion. His conspicuous physical scars bear witness to the damage he suffered eight years ago. Lisoka can barely do anything for himself.

Deep in the pastoral fields of Archer’s Post, Samburu County, herdsmen and boys pass time by making ornaments from metals and other objects collected. This rather ordinary pastime almost turned tragic at a local school near Laresoro village last year when a group of boys was found playing with a sack full of what turned out to be explosives. “Were it not for the instincts of one of our workers, it would have been a disaster like no other,” an administrator at the school told the Sunday Nation.
