Gogol Bordello thrives on chaos, and their Birmingham Academy show was no exception. From the first stomp of I Would Never Wanna Be Young Again, the crowd was in a frenzy, embracing the band’s raw energy. Not a Crime and Wonderlust King kept the momentum surging, with Eugene Hütz commanding the stage in his signature whirlwind style. Violinist Sergey Ryabtsev and accordionist Boris Pelekh fueled the mayhem, weaving frantic melodies through pounding drums and roaring guitars.

When I hear a controversy, local or otherwise, I like to try and learn what I can before I feel comfortable sharing my thoughts. Going to the source is always great. So after hearing some folks raising concerns about the Resource Center on Ute Avenue, I went to check it out myself. I was not offered any crack while there. Nor witnessed the use of the substance.

A historic night for Dream Theater at London’s biggest arena. The first night of their 40th anniversary world tour, their first headline show at The O2 Arena, and their first live show with returning original drummer and Dream Theater founding member, Mike Portnoy, in over 14 years. A show with this significance was going to need a very special setlist. Dream Theater delivered on this, in spades.

In a somewhat shocking turn of events earlier this week, Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes have announced via social media they’re taking a break after their current UK/EU tour. Following their nine year musical career as one of the most iconic names in British punk rock. During their near decade at the forefront of the UK punk scene, the band have released five studio albums. The most recent of which, “Dark Rainbow” was released in January of this year.

After two days of great music, the last day had a lot to live up to. I started the day at the BBC Introducing Stage to mix things up. Daydreamers took to the stage with their youthful pop to a surprisingly large crowd. The light-hearted songs were very reminiscent of The 1975, with the charismatic frontman, powerful drums and bass lines, and the 80s-style guitar accompaniment.

The second day of the Reading Festival 2024 was a definite gear shift from Friday. With Lana Del Rey headlining the main stage a different group of people were drawn to the field. Starting the day with a bang, Militarie Gun hit the Festival Republic Stage. Although playing to a reasonably modest crowd they didn’t let that stop them. Every band member was giving it their all and the crowd loved it.

Reading Festival 2024 delivered a weekend of musical multitudes, with headliners Blink 182, Lana Del Rey, and Liam Gallagher drew in crowds of all sizes wanting to dance and sing long into the night. With bands like Blink 182 and Neck Deep hitting the stage there was an air of nostalgia for the old days of Reading Festival that was just a bit more grungy than the Reading Festival we know today. If you are a fan of the old-school rock, metal, and punk genres then Friday was the day for you.

Last night, the O2 Institute Birmingham was the epicentre of punk rock excellence as Chicago’s Alkaline Trio delivered a performance that can only be described as legendary. With a setlist that perfectly blended new tracks with timeless classics, the band proved once again why they are the undisputed kings of punk rock. As the house lights dimmed, the crowd’s anticipation reached a fever pitch.
