I overheard a conversation during an assignment at a cat show in Ballinteer, Dublin, between Northern cat owners that piqued my interest. Sharon and Trevor McNeely were showing their Maine Coons and all I really picked up on was “Swimming!” While out for walk with their Maine Coons, they had realised that they (the cats) had a hankering for water. On a beach, the cats kept making for the sea.

Co-written with brother Colin Thornton, it’s a loose adaptation of Mid-August Lunch (2008), Gianni Di Gregorio’s comedy about a man living with his mother in a small apartment, only to get saddled with three additional old women – all of them strangers – during an Italian holiday.

It’s circus season, and colourful big tops are popping up in towns around Ireland. The Gerbola Circus is preparing to celebrate 25 years in business. “This May is a big one for us,” says Tara Gerbola. “On May 23rd 25 years ago, we opened in Stradbally. We started off really small, with a credit union loan, and we focus on family, on quality. We pay attention to detail and keep things cosy.”The Gerbola Circus will be on the road until the end of October, she says.
