Mourners gathered in Birmingham to say their final goodbyes to Aston Villa legend Gary Shaw. A funeral procession for the former striker, who died last month at the age of 63, took place in the city on Wednesday afternoon. Crowds assembled near the fan zone at Villa Park to pay respects as the cortege went past en route to Sutton Coldfield Crematorium, where the funeral service was held.

Event Director Mary Ross said the event had snowballed since she launched it with family and friends in 2010Hundreds of runners and walkers have gathered to celebrate the 600th Parkrun at Cannon Hill Park in Birmingham. The free weekly event sees participants tackle a 5km (3.1 mile) course on tarmac footpaths around parkland. One of the biggest of its kind in the country, the race began at the site in 2010. Event Director Mary Ross described hitting the milestone as "absolutely amazing".

City bosses are seeking to change the funding schedule for the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. Leaders are set to write to the government requesting that the city council's 2023/24 investment in the £13.7m event be reduced. The following year's amount would be increased to make up the shortfall. It comes amid fears for Birmingham's ability to host the event after the council declared effective bankruptcy in September.
