According to ETH Zurich researchers Sandro Rüegge, Johannes Wikner, and Kaveh Razavi, Spectre v2 mitigations held for six long years, but their new "Branch Predictor Race Conditions" exploit casually steamrolls them. The mess, named ‘branch privilege injection’ and filed under CVE-2024-45332, is a race condition in Intel’s beloved branch predictors, namely the Branch Target Buffer (BTB) and Indirect Branch Predictor (IBP).

Stocklytics.com figures reveal that the annual growth rate for IT services spending will slump to 4.5 per cent by 2029, a sharp drop from the double-digit rises that kept the industry fat for most of the last five years. The rot has already started. In 2023, companies splashed out $1.29 trillion (€1.21 trillion) on IT services, a whopping 15 per cent rise in a year. In 2024, they blew $1.42 trillion (€1.33 trillion), but growth slowed to 9.4 per cent.

According to Digitimes Taiwan, chief executive Jensen Huang has been "shuttling back and forth" between the US and China trying to limit the damage. Meanwhile, Nvidia has slapped price increases of between 5 and 10 per cent on its gaming GPUs and up to 15 per cent on AI gear. The outfit is feeling the sting of a $5.5 billion hole in its quarterly earnings after US export restrictions banned sales of key AI chips like the H20 in China.
