Of all the curiosities in this exasperating season for Tottenham, surely it is the midfield - or lack thereof - that stands out as the most infuriating. Even Ange Postecoglou, who has gone above and beyond in defending his players this season, ran out of patience with Yves Bissouma on Sunday, subbing him at half-time and criticising his display afterwards. I have had the distinct impression all season that the Tottenham manager is not sure how to use his midfield with the options available.

Generally speaking, when the mornings become lighter and spring appears around the corner, Tottenham fans often find themselves at a crossroads. Countless times over the past 20 or so years this time in the calendar brings existential questions. Which competition should be prioritised? Is there enough squad depth to challenge on multiple fronts or just the one? Is the boss the right person to meet the challenges constantly thrown at the Spurs manager, whoever it may be?

There is no point in describing the current situation at Tottenham as anything other than grim. Terrible form, a dreadful league position and an injury list that keeps getting worse - even though that appeared impossible. However - and this will not improve the current situation, or relieve the pressure on Postecoglou, or cheer Spurs fans up this week….or next week - it might be worth taking stock of the astonishing development opportunities being handed to some of the young players at the club.

I suppose they’ll say they are still focussing on the build up to a showpiece event. Just not the FA Cup Final. It really is bewildering how this competition has declined so much.

Now two Premier League games on the Friday night before the FA Cup final. Chelsea v Man United Aston Villa v Tottenham If they wanted to keep this (entirely predictable) hollow promise, you'd think they'd have played on the Thursday. https://t.co/ux0nkLYi6b

Wharton update: Oliver Glasner says Adam Wharton has twisted his ankle. Says it’s a little bit sore but they’ll see how it recovers. He’s hopeful it’s not too bad. #cpfc @BBCLondonSport

Glasner just does not pick weakened teams. At all.
