WHEELING – A thunderous downpour cut short Wheeling Park’s home opener on Friday at Wheeling Island Stadium- but not before the Spring Mills Cardinals had already rained on their parade. The Patriots (1-1) fell 27-0 in their matchup against the Cardinals (2-0) in a game that was called off with 3:08 to go in the third quarter- after lightning delays had kept both teams in their locker rooms for over an hour.

Coming into her junior season, Wheeling Park’s Alexis Bordas was already in rarified air. After a sophomore year in which she took home the Mary Ostrowski award and the Gatorade West Virginia Girls Basketball Player of the Year award, as well as breaking the 1,000-point threshold in just two seasons, there was one thing Bordas had yet to achieve — a state championship.
