Britain’s new government delivered its first budget on Wednesday setting out its plans for taxing and spending three months after coming to power in a landslide general election victory. It is the first time the Labour party has had a chance to do this for 14 years with the Conservative party having been in power since 2010. Wednesday’s budget could not have been more different from those that have come before and it made history for a number of reasons.

It was about half an hour after the final whistle at the FA Cup final when I had my exchange with Sir Jim Ratcliffe. He was still in the royal box at Wembley, savouring the win against Manchester City. And I managed to worm my way past security to get close enough to shout at him. To his credit, he came over and shook my hand, though he said nothing when I implored him: “Don’t sack Ten Hag!”That was my position then, and it hasn’t changed, despite the club’s awful start to the season.

Donald Trump risks being a “loser president” if he wins November’s election and imposes a bad peace deal on Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said, saying it would mean the end of the US as a global “player”. In an interview with the Guardian in Kyiv, Zelenskiy said he had “no strategy yet” for what to do if Trump returned to the White House, and that the former British prime minister Boris Johnson had approached him on his behalf.
