Former President Donald Trump has won the state of North Carolina and its 16 electoral votes, according to the . The win now puts Trump closer to the 270 electoral vote mark that he needs to win the election. He stands now at 230 votes. With 89% of votes reporting, Trump leads Vice President Kamala Harris with 51% of the vote compared to Harris’s 48%. The state was widely considered to be one of the most competitive in the country prior to election night.

Despite former President Donald Trump’s previous opposition to voting ahead of Election Day, he, alongside other Virginia Republicans, encouraged attendees to vote early during a Chesterfield County campaign rally on Saturday. The rally was headlined by Republican National Convention co-chair Lara Trump and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who told supporters to bring their friends, family and other potential voters to the polls.

Students at the University of Richmond were left in Gray Court with water-damaged rooms, parking tickets and alcohol citations after the first and second floor flooded on late Friday evening. Gray’s common rooms were filled with student belongings as residents frantically tried to empty their rooms while water poured from their ceilings and into the halls.

Richmond City voters overwhelmingly rejected the proposed construction of a $562 million casino in Southside Richmond, exceeding the initial expectations of what was expected to be a close race. The referendum asked voters to decide whether to allow companies Urban One and Churchill Downs to construct a casino at 2001 Walmsley Blvd. and 4700 Trenton Ave. in south Richmond.

After a series of victories, The Collegian now projects that the Democrats maintain control of the Virginia State Senate. Democrats have reached the 21-seat threshold necessary to keep control of the chamber. Key races that contributed to this victory included Senate District 16, where Del. Schuyler VanValkenburg defeated incumbent Sen. Siobhan Dunnavant, a Republican. Democrats also won in state Senate District 31, where Democrat Russet Perry defeated Republican Juan Pablo Segura.

Virginia Delegates Schuyler VanValkenburg, ‘04, and Rodney Willett spoke on pressing issues, like college affordability and climate change at a Henrico candidate “meet and greet” at Deep Run High School Sunday. All candidates for House of Delegates District 57, House of Delegates District 58 and State Senate District 16 were invited to attend. Of the invitees, only VanValkenburg and Willett, both Democrats, were in attendance.

This is the first semester the University of Richmond removed contact tracing and mandatory reports of positive COVID-19 cases. UR announced they were loosening COVID-19 protocols May 8. Isolation protocols were relaxed as UR removed six modular home units used for COVID-19 isolation in July. UR is maintaining limited isolation space for serious cases of COVID-19 or other illnesses that require isolation, according to its website. Free self-test kits are no longer supplied by UR.

The University of Richmond Dining Services announced that most chicken and lamb dishes served in Heilman Dining Center are now halal certified, including the popular spider chicken. Halal, an Arabic word that translates to “permissible” in English, sets guidelines to which Muslims are supposed to adhere in their day-to-day lives. It includes requirements for the preparation of food, which impact the diet of many Muslim students at UR.
