Plans have been unveiled to redesign Melton Mowbray town centre to attract more visitors and make it easier for residents to get around. Planning officials at the borough council have drawn up a Melton Mowbray Design Guide, which includes establishing clearly defined gateways into town, decluttering the pedestrian areas and installing lots of extra green planted areas.

Primary schoolchildren got involved in planting trees at a new housing development at Stathern. Pupils from Stathern Primary School were invited by Davidsons Homes to its scheme at The Paddocks, off Main Street,to plant fruit trees, which should flourish beautifully over the coming years. They were accompanied by Ken Bray, a school governor and chairman of Stathern Parish Council, as well as the housebuilders’ site team.

A prestigious group of singers is to perform a spring concert at Burrough-on-the-Hill on Saturday April 26. The Cutty Sark Singers, so called because they were founded in Greenwich, London, will belt out traditional choral music ranging from the 16th century to the current day. The show, in the atmospheric Church of St Mary the Virgin, will raise funds for the upkeep of the historic church.

The manager of Melton Mowbray’s foodbank has made a desperate appeal for more support as public donations drop during ‘a massive increase in demand’. Siggy Atherton has been manager of the Storehouse, on Nottingham Street, for five years and she says requests for help from families, the elderly and homeless people is at an all time high. The soaring cost of living, coupled with cuts in government support, has resulted in an increasing number of people visiting the centre.

Volunteers with the Melton waterways group have been left ‘shattered’ after their new workboat was stolen just days after being launched and a security camera was vandalised. We reported last week how Melton and Oakham Waterways Society (MOWS) had taken delivery of their new £10,000 workboat, courtesy of the Severn Trent Community Fund, to help clear debris and enable hire boats to get along the rivers passing through the town.
