Reform UK has elected its group leader on Leicestershire County Council ahead of Wednesday’s first full council meeting since the recent elections. The party celebrated major success at the county ballot, winning 25 of the 55 seats to become the dominant party despite previously having no councillors at County Hall. They elected Daniel Harrison (Ashby de la Zouch division) as leader and Whitwick representative, Joseph Boam, as deputy leader.

A Melton Mowbray supermarket is closed today (Monday) and tomorrow for a refurbishment. Aldi, on Leicester Road, will reopen on Wednesday at 8am, with increased chiller space, as well as additional room for Specialbuys and re-designed Health and Beauty and Bakery sections. The changes are part of an investment by the company into further improving its stores and services across the UK, based on feedback from more than 50,000 customers.

Organisers estimate around 15,000 enjoyed this year’s 1940s Melton Mowbray event over the weekend. Nostalgia-lovers came from far and wide to sample a range of activities and displays celebrating the fashions, music and culture of wartime Britain. Many who attended the free event were clad in dresses, suits and hats from the era plus military uniforms, with lots to enjoy in Market Place and St Mary’s Church, as well as the town parks.

Refreshments will be served once again in Melton’s Wilton Park with the opening tomorrow (Saturday) of a new snack bar. The Pavilion in the Park will offer hot and cold drinks, teas, coffees and traditional snacks, served from a cleverly designed, fully customised shipping container. It is being operated by Connells family, the local catering specialists who also run the ice cream kiosk near the Bandstand.

A community forest school and a leisure woodland are being created at the site formerly used by the old crown green bowls club in Melton Mowbray. Melton Indoor Bowls Club is repurposing the old greens – adjacent to its HQ off Leicester Road – into a haven for wildlife with hundreds of trees plus facilities for petanque, bowls and croquet.
