He turned water on this field two weeks ago and ever since the wheat has sprung up and started marching toward harvest. East of Jefferson, Kansas, Marty Reichenberger is spraying a corn field with herbicide. He pauses after the first field to refuel while fellow farm hand Zack greases the hydraulics on the John Deere R4044. Six weeks after planting corn, Reichenberger times the herbicide application with the emergence of noxious weeds — mainly Johnson grass and pigweed. Traveling up to 16 miles an hour, the sprayer can cover 100 acres an hour, 150 in fields without terraces.
