In some ways, my approach to this tranquil, therapeutic pastime mirrors the way I play golf. There’s plenty of enthusiastic endeavour but I’m still not quite sure what the hell I’m doing at times. Come to think of it, that sounds just like the way I tackle writing a column too. There may not be many prize blooms in this correspondent’s back yard but at least we get to write about the best in show on golf’s grandest stages. Step forward Scottie Scheffler. Again.

• Colin Montgomerie lost the 1995 PGA Championship in a playoff against Steve Elkington. • Montgomerie birdied the final three holes of regulation to force the playoff. • Both players birdied the 18th in the playoff, but Elkington's birdie putt was closer, securing his victory. • This loss was part of a string of near misses for Montgomerie in major championships.

As the closing round of the weather-delayed PGA Championship was set to unravel tonight at Quail Hollow, many of you will be watching on and listening to the sing-song delivery of Sky television’s lead commentator, Ewen Murray, putting another major championship to bed.

Then again, the cursing, cussing throttling that a seething Tyrrell Hatton dished out to his poor old driver after a tee-shot just about had the North Carolina-Mecklenburg PD responding to an assault and battery. There’s never a dull moment with Mr Hatton, is there? Day two of the PGA of America’s showpiece teed-up plenty of intriguing storylines. Much of the focus was on Rory McIlroy’s salvage operation.

Thank goodness then for the sage golfing guidance of Ryan Fox. “Have a whack and see what happens,” said the New Zealander who came into the 107th PGA Championship on the back of a maiden PGA Tour win last Sunday. It was a decent old whack too. His four-under 67 left him one shot off the early clubhouse lead set by championship debutant, Ryan Gerard. Luke Donald, Europe’s Ryder Cup captain who is on something of a jolly at Quail Hollow this week, showed his enduring class with a 67 too.
