Anyway, YouTube allows users to create, upload, search for and watch just about anything that tickles their fancy. And, as you can imagine, there are some weird and wonderful fancies being tickled. In the more genteel world of golf, meanwhile, the great Lydia Ko has been using YouTube to aid her preparations for this week’s US Women’s Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin.

This time last year, many of us members of that esteemed union just about choked on our own brains when confronted by the opening paragraph of a press release detailing the latest R&A initiative. Here’s what it said. “The Gang, a full-service gaming studio building best-in-class branded immersive activations, has partnered with The R&A to launch ‘Just Swing’, a new virtual golf experience on Roblox.” If you know what all that means, then well done. If you don’t, then don’t worry. You’re not alone.

There was plenty to write home about too. A nip-and-tuck tussle between Alexa Glover and Molly Graham went the full distance – as did The Herald’s golf writer of the day – before Glover won it on the final green. Even a bunneted, bearded St Andrews icon was impressed. “Old Tom Morris was thanked for presiding at the tee,” stated the report as it moved on from the intricacies of the matchplay cut-and-thrust to the pleasantries of the prize-giving ceremony.
