2 1/1 Bit of a throwback at the Taunton Brewhouse last week as a one-night show celebrated the dying art of letter writing. In "Posting Letters to the Moon," husband and wife actor team Lucy Fleming and Simon Williams, who are perhaps most well known these days for being in The Archers, read from wartime letters written between Celia Johnson of Brief Encounter fame and her husband Peter Fleming, who was frequently away with the military during World War II.

The poor weather recently has reminded us all of those dark and dreary days in January and February. Kim Hull, 50, went missing overnight on Friday having possibly last been seen in Budleigh Salterton. Searches were conducted along the East Devon coast, including in the Sidmouth area, Exmouth police said.

4 1/1 Hundreds of people were at the Taunton county cricket ground this week for the latest in a monthly series of events designed to combat social isolation. There was a famous speaker in former England cricketer Chris Tavare but the main focus of the gathering was to promote socialising through the simple idea of walking and talking. People gathered at the ground for a gentle stroll around the stadium, allowing them to catch up with old friends or make new ones.

We didn't see them but we sure did hear them. Britain's loudest bird doesn't show his face very often but booming male Bitterns are a feature at this time of the year as they begin to try and attract a breeding mate. And the RSPB reserve at Ham Wall near Bridgwater and Glastonbury is as good a place as any to find them, or hear them anyway.

My Favorite Maine Lighthouses

With more than five dozen lighthouses dotted along the Maine coastline, my three-month stay in Bangor in 2023 was insufficient time to visit them all. But I did manage to travel to about a third, so here I present some of my favorites – a list, of course, that is highly subjective. These and many other Maine lighthouses along the coastline remain active and automated, often with museums, visitor centers, gift shops, and/or walking trails for visitors to explore.

Crowds line up ahead of the opening day of the cricket season (Image: Richard Walsh) The weather was hardly set fair this morning for the opening day of the cricket season but it didn't seem to deter hardcore fans who lined up outside Taunton cricket ground for the game between Somerset CCC and Worcestershire. The sun is supposed to come out later and we are likely to bask in low 20s temperatures. It really might feel like we are in July rather than early April after all.
