After losing to eventual Virginia Class 6 finalists McLean on penalty kicks in last year’s regional semifinals, Westfield opened this season with another matchup against the No. 4 Highlanders and an opportunity for revenge. The Bulldogs got it in a chippy, back-and-forth contest, prevailing, 3-2, to start their year with a signature win. Westfield followed that up with another Top 10 victory over Herndon. Now, the Bulldogs jump to No. 3 in these rankings after the first week of the season.

After winning its first state title in 2023, Colgan graduated eight starters and looked to a new core of players who wanted to leave their own mark on the program. The Sharks maintained a high level of play last season despite the changes and nearly repeated as champions, falling on penalty kicks in the Virginia Class 6 final against Freedom (South Riding). This year, No. 2 Colgan brings back the majority of that team after graduating just two starters.
