In June 2023, the Ukrainian novelist and poet Victoria Amelina was about to leave the country and take up a residency in Paris, where she could be reunited with her young son and turn her wartime experiences into a book. Before her departure she made a last trip east, accompanying a delegation of Colombian writers to the frontline town of Kramatorsk. They were having supper in a pizzeria when a Russian missile struck. The Colombians were unharmed, but Amelina died of her wounds a few days later.
