They were accused of conspiracy to commit subversion after holding an unofficial primary election in Hong Kong in 2020. They were arrested in 2021. Hong Kong authorities say the defendants were trying to overthrow the territory's government. Democracy activist Benny Tai received the longest sentence of ten years.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its junior coalition partner Komeito secured 215 seats in the lower house of parliament - 233 seats are needed to form a majority. The main opposition, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ) won 148 seats, up from 98 previously. Under the constitution, the parties now have 30 days to try to form a coalition government. There could be days or weeks of political jockeying ahead.
