Some people love the variety dim sum offers. For me, the beauty of dim sum is the rhythm, and Tim Ho Wan exceeded expectations. After marking my extensive order on the little paper sheet, the Tim Ho Wan staff executed a sequence that came out perfectly. Nothing was cold or came out too quickly. It’s a tempo that needs constant supervision, and not an easy feat in a fast-paced restaurant environment. That attention to detail also extended to the food, which also did not disappoint.

I’m always on the lookout for great lunch deals since it’s hard to be out and about after 7 p.m. with a toddler in tow. I like places that give hearty helpings without skimping on quality or service, and Japanese-style yakiniku joint Han no Daidokoro did not disappoint. There were higher-end specials, like the washu and Miyazaki tenderloin set ($68), as well as more reasonably priced ones like the washu kalbi lunch set ($25).

My life consists of myriad dining daydreams. When new restaurants open, I add them to my mental list of places to eat, but excuses pile up: life is busy, the hype needs to die down first, I should give them time to train their servers and perfect the menu. I tell myself I’ll go eventually, but that day never comes. Such was the case for Tanaka Ramen & Izakaya. And, boy, what a mistake it was to not go sooner.
