The Detroit Institute of Arts’ journey to expand accessibility has been decades-long and is still ongoing. This article originally appeared in Museum magazine’s March/April 2025 issue, a benefit of AAM membership. How does a large encyclopedic art museum, or any museum, begin working on accessibility and sustain momentum? This has been a central question for staff at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) for over 20 years.

It was April 2020, and I was balancing motherhood, a master’s degree, and running a community café for people with dementia and four-year-olds. Initial whispers of an infectious disease had escalated into widespread fear and lockdowns. With aged care residents being among the most vulnerable to COVID-19, even window therapy, which involves interacting with elders through a closed window from outside the facility, was no longer allowed.

I didn’t used to think that eight years was a very long time, but now I know it is if you work in certain parts of housing.  It might be that those who’ve been in tenancy sustainment, safeguarding, allocations and lettings, welfare benefits, and intervention and enforcement throughout the last decade aren’t aware how much things have altered. Maybe, for them, the pressure has ramped up slowly and gradually.

After the summer of 2020, when the Black Lives Matters movement ignited the globe, the corporate appetite for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) skyrocketed. Organizations saw the value of at least appearing to be inclusive as DEI was on trend. Over the last four years, that appetite has waned and commitments have diminished.
