I have a confession to make: I had the wrong idea about pharmacy deserts the first time I heard the term. Let’s first look at the definition: an area where residents lack convenient access to a pharmacy–10 miles in rural areas or one mile in urban areas. Clearly 10 miles in a rural area is a great distance to fill a script, pick up some acne cream or receive a flu shot. But then, I thought, one mile in an urban area is not that far.
