Kate O’Connor produced a throw of 50.36 in the javelin to move up to 14th place overall in the heptathlon with just the 800m to come this evening. Earlier the Newry athlete had leapt to a distance of 5.79 in the long jump. Both events were down on her personal bests. O’Connor’s overall score is 5249 gives her a chance of a top 12 finish with a good run in the final event but her Irish record of 6297 would seem out of reach.

There would be no medal for Ardmore’s Daniel Coyle in the Olympic individual showjumping final at the magnificent Chateau de Versailles venue outside of Paris. On a brutally tough course for the final, the duo looked to be heading for their fourth clear round of the week and a place in the jump-off for the medals. The Ireland duo had posted three clear rounds, including two in the team competition and another in the individual qualifier and expectations were high they would contend for the medals.
