On October 30 2024, the President of the United States met with President Nikos Christodoulides of the Republic of Cyprus at the White House. It was the first official visit of a Cypriot leader since 1996. The visit had a symbolic connotation since 2024 marks 50 years of illegal Turkish occupation of North Cyprus. President Christodoulides and President Biden held a similar position regarding the subject of Cyprus, reaffirming the position of the U.S. as a reliable and strategic partner.

Last week, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin signed a new decree which will allow foreign nationals to apply for a temporary visa of three months in Russia, bypassing the established quota regarding knowledge of the Russian language, its history and fundamental laws. The decree aims to provide “assistance to any foreigners who want to escape the neoliberal ideas being put forward in their countries and move to Russia”.

In June, Kaja Kallas, the former Estonian Prime Minister, submitted her resignation as the head of her country, to become the EU’s new Foreign Policy Chief. In simpler terms, she will be the top executive diplomat in Brussels; serving and promoting the EU’s diplomatic positions around the world. Unfortunately, Kaja Kallas’ obsession with Russia, alongside her dangerous rhetoric, will not help the European Union at all. Her appointment probably comes at the worst time regarding EU diplomacy.

By the late 1980s, the Soviet Union was on the edge of a total collapse. Political and social turmoil loomed over Central Asia, clearing the path for civil unrest and massive protests. The civil war in Tajikistan that erupted in 1992, led the country to total chaos with different factions fighting over control of the country. In a span of five years, thousands of people lost their lives, while millions were forced to relocate to escape the bloodbath.
