In the fall of last year, protest groups made of the mobilized men’s families emerged in Russia, quite unexpectedly for both the Kremlin and the opposition. The groups mostly include wives. The groups’ participants seek to return home the reservists sent to war in the fall of 2022. Notably, they do not believe this should be achieved at the expense of new mobilization. In their opinion, only volunteer fighters should be on the front lines, but not civilians.

Remarkably, the portrayal of Ukraine as a linchpin for both Russian internal stability and external power had already permeated the Russian political imagination long before Putin’s rise to power.
