Siddique Kappan was on his way to report on the gang rape and murder of a Dalit teenager in Uttar Pradesh when he was arrested on 5 October 2020. The 5,000-page charge sheet reportedly accused the Muslim journalist of being paid to cause trouble, including ‘to incite Muslims’. It included excerpts from 36 articles Kappan had written about ongoing religious and sectarian tensions in India. He spent over two years in jail before getting bail in February 2023.

India is experiencing a lot of – with over 65 per cent of the population under the age of 35, there’s thought to be great potential for economic growth as the working-age population balloons. But are we overlooking another equally important but untapped demographic? Women. By 2036 the female population of India is expected to reach 743 million. But their contribution to the GDP has remained below the global average at 18 per cent. And there’s a good reason for this.

Recently, I wanted an image generated by artificial intelligence (AI) to illustrate a LinkedIn post on leadership. I entered a prompt into popular AI platform ChatGPT and it generated a few images of male leaders. I tried a few different versions but every prompt on leadership frustratingly returned images of men until I specifically asked for it to generate one of a woman. But there was a catch here, too.

A couple of years ago Noor Jehan was working at a construction site as a mason’s helper when she got a phone call. Her husband – a rickshaw puller – had fainted while ferrying a man in his vehicle, succumbing to the sweltering sun and an empty stomach. This was not a one off. ‘Throughout summer, he keeps fainting,’ she says. ‘Someone calls from his phone then we go and get him.’India – home to 1.4 billion people – has been getting hotter every year and the poor have been bearing the brunt.
