Mumbai: This year, the Union government allocated Rs 3.27 lakh crore or 6.8% of total expenditure under the gender budget, which includes schemes for the welfare of women. This represents a 19% increase compared to the revised estimate for 2023-24 and is also 5% higher than the interim budget for 2024-25 presented in February this year. India began releasing a gender budget alongside the Union budget in 2005-06.

Mumbai: The Women’s Reservation Bill allocates 33% of all seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures for women. However, only 13% of the Members of Parliament (MPs) elected to the 18th Lok Sabha are women. Of 543 elected MPs, 73 are women, marking a decrease from the 78 women elected to the 17th Lok Sabha. The gender gap in elected representatives begins with the disparity among candidates. Of the 8,337 candidates who stood for election, 797 were women.

It was a friend who told Ananya about a make-up course she was pursuing at the government-supported shelter home for transgender persons.

Mumbai: Over the past decade, Indian prisons have increasingly had more undertrial prisoners, with their share increasing from 66% of prisoners in 2012 to 76% in 2022, as revealed in the latest Prison Statistics India report released by the National Crime Records Bureau. While this figure rose each year, the greatest rise was seen in the pandemic year of 2020, when undertrial prisoner share rose from 69% to 76%.
