    Statistics can be fairly deceptive. At least, this is suggested by latest estimates released by World Bank, according to which India’s extreme poverty rate dropped to 5.3% in 2022-23 from 27.1% in 2011-12. The picture of India having succeeded in pulling around 269 million people above the international poverty threshold in around a decade’s time is, however, not as rosy as it seems to be.

    Considering the religious, social and cultural importance accorded by Indian Hindus to married women applying vermillion, that is Sindoor, in parting of their hair, it is strange that this has been linked by India against its “war” with Pakistan. Yes, this refers to usage of term “Operation Sindoor.” The word “Operation,” in a common person’s understanding, is generally linked with medical surgery. Thus, if one talks of operation-hand, it is naturally linked with surgical treatment of the hand.

    Interestingly in its war against Pakistan, India appears to have made deliberate attempt to put ladies in the forefront. Yes, this refers to two ladies from the military who, along with a male bureaucrat (Foreign Secretary Misri), were engaged in giving briefings regularly while the war lasted. One was from the Army (Col. Qureshi) and the other from Air-Force (Wing Commander Singh). Qureshi is a Muslim and Singh a Hindu.
