    PINE HILLS, Calif. – A strong earthquake struck in the eastern San Diego County highlands Monday, rattling a large swath of Southern California as far north as Los Angeles but resulting in no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The 5.2-magnitude temblor occurred at 10:08 a.m., centered in the Pine Hills area, about 2.5 miles south of Julian, according to the US Geological Survey.

    SAN DIEGO – Filipino American chef Tara Monsod was among the culinary artisans nominated Wednesday for a coveted James Beard Award for top chef in California. Monsod, the executive chef of Animae steakhouse in downtown San Diego and Le Coq in La Jolla, is one of five nominees for the title of Best Chef: California by the James Beard Foundation, whose awards are considered the pinnacle of culinary achievement. The nomination marks Monsod’s second consecutive year in the prestigious finals.

    LOS ANGELES – Val Kilmer, who starred in Hollywood blockbusters as “Top Gun,” “Batman” and “Tombstone,”  died Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 65. Kilmer died of pneumonia, his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer told The New York Times. Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 and later recovered, she said. One of his earliest roles was 1984’s ”Top Secret!” – a parody of spy movies in which he plays an American rocker who stumbles into an East Germany reunification plot.
