Niran Al-Agba's trip with a group of physicians to ride in a hot-air balloon turned into a chance to do more, and think about how "making lists" has affected her life. We met at dawn, 25 women gathered for our annual Physician Moms Group retreat, held in Temecula, California, this year. We climbed into two large wicker baskets and watched the flames roar to life over our heads. As the balloon took shape, the anticipation grew for those of us who had never done this before.

Niran Al-AgbaJune 28, 2024 at 8:01 AM·4 min readIn early June, the principal of Central Kitsap High School sent an email to parents about a new policy, prohibiting cell phone use and listening devices in classrooms, locker rooms, and bathrooms, starting this fall. The protocol will be: “When entering a classroom, students will remove any wireless headphones or Bluetooth-enabled devices, turn off their cell phones, and place them in the teacher-designated spot.

Harrison Butker, a 28-year-old kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs, has been on my mind after commencement speech he delivered at Benedictine College, a small private school in Atchison, Kansas.

My 13-year-old son has been doing something strange recently — he has been cooking for our family of six. Some days he makes breakfast and on others it is lunch, or dinner. The other night he was obsessed with making orange chicken — it was delicious. The credit for his inspiration goes to one special teacher, Laura Cherry, the culinary teacher at Central Kitsap Middle School. Laura and I attended Olympic High School together more than 30 years ago, graduating in 1992 and 1991 respectively.

Late Sunday night, I got a call from the owner of another business in the Silverdale building where my clinic is located. They reported water — a lot of water — was running along the side of the building and creating a river of ice across the parking lot and onto the street below. I hate water. It leaves a trail of permanent damage in its wake. The damage can be difficult and costly to repair. It creates mildew. It fosters the growth of mold. Once it seeps into a structure, you cannot get rid of it.

Editor's note: The family of Bob Vermeers has launched a GoFundMe drive to help support his widow, Wanda. Read more about her situation at this link. Nearly every morning for the past seven years, I could set my watch by the sound of footsteps on my porch. There was a rhythmic thunk-tap of shoes on the wood walkway as my paper carrier headed to my front door. Then I would hear it; the plop of the newspaper landing outside. I love reading the paper copy of the Kitsap Sun. I love holding it in my hands.

As the day for demolition nears the old Harrison Hospital building on Cherry Avenue in Bremerton, I asked Virginia Mason Franciscan Health President Chad Melton if I could take a final look at the place where my dreams to become a doctor first began. He kindly allowed me to tour the facility and accompanied me along the way. I want to use this column to take you on my journey through a community icon, a place that many of us, including me, fought against closing.

Niran Al-AgbaColumnistConsidering the nation’s increasing political divisiveness, I decided it was a good summer to expose my children to a time in history when our country was more divided than it is today. So our family set out to explore the Civil War era by visiting the battlefields of Gettysburg, Antietam, Harper’s Ferry, First and Second Bull Run and Fredericksburg, three field hospitals, and the National Civil War Medical Museum.

Niran Al-AgbaColumnistI've shared concerns about our healthcare system from my perspective as a provider, but my disillusionment may never have been sharper than when I experienced it as a parent. My youngest son developed abdominal pain around 11 p.m. one night over Juneteenth weekend. The next morning, he started vomiting. It was an ominous bright yellow-green, the color that makes pediatricians consult surgeons in the middle of the night. Thankfully, the vomiting slowed that afternoon.
