    A massive white airship hovering 1,000 metres above a research base in Jiangxi province successfully generated over 100 kilowatts of electricity on 14 January, setting a new world record. The airship, known as the “power station in the sky”, measures 15 metres in diameter and approximately 30 metres in length, reported Science and Technology Daily. It uses a helium-filled balloon to lift a lightweight generator into the sky, where it harnesses wind energy at high altitudes.

    On November 28, workers planted the final 100 metres of trees along the southern edge of the Taklamakan Desert, completing a 3,046-kilometre “green belt” encircling China’s largest desert, according to Xinhua News. The Taklamakan Desert, covering an area of 337,600 square kilometres – roughly the size of Finland – is the second-largest shifting sand desert in the world, behind the Sahara.
