In the first year after Gujarat’s education department raised the eligible parent income to Rs 6 lakh per annum for RTE quota admissions, 4,200 parents from higher income brackets have enrolled their children in self-finance schools. Previously, eligible income limits for RTE admissions stood at Rs 1.2 lakh per annum for rural areas and Rs 1.5 lakh for urban areas. The education department announced this upward revision starting from academic year 2025.

Twenty-three engineering colleges across Gujarat enrolled students in single digits during the first admission round this year. Twelve colleges reported zero students despite having hundreds of available seats. The Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) allocated 30,305 seats from 56,722 available positions. Only 18,068 students actually turned up at colleges. This represents just 59.62% of allotted seats finding takers.

An anonymous whistleblower has sent an email to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry alleging serious governance problems at National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. The email questions current director Ashok Mondal’s eligibility and his administrative decisions. The allegations, made in an email to minister Piyush Goyal and secretary, DPIIT on Tuesday, point to arbitrary decision-making and financial mismanagement.

Bhaumik Nagar, a National Institute of Design Ahmedabad faculty member, has stepped down as Director of NID-Andhra Pradesh just seven months into his appointment. He resumed his previous role at NID Gandhinagar on 1 June 2025. Nagar was appointed to head the NID-AP campus near Vijayawada for five years in October 2024 by the central government’s Department of Promotion for Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) .
