TWO INTERPRETATIONS of the phrase ‘possession of land’ are being forwarded by the Supreme Court of India – first, that the ‘land’ and the ‘structure’ built over it are two separate entities, and second, that the ‘land’ and the ‘structure’ built over it should be considered one and the same. The second understanding, that ‘land’ includes things embedded in the earth such as scaffoldings for a building, has been a well settled principle of property law for centuries.

However, I have always been inspired by her fight for justice against brutality. She has been a central figure in my classroom discussions, a protagonist who always encouraged one to believe in the virtue of justice-seeking. Her story is an exemplar for an ideal Indian Muslim.

Tehran has put off for now any retaliatory strike for assassination of Hamas' political chief Ismail Haniyeh on Iranian soil, thus giving rise to apprehensions that Israel may escape retribution yet again for excesses it has been committing not just against Palestinians but also Iran, which leads what has come to be regarded as the 'axis of resistance' in the Middle East. This may be good news for the region in the short term, but bad for the world in the long run.
