I experienced the black nod again today, and it was as wholesome and refreshing as the first time I experienced it. I first found out that there was something called black nod some years ago. It was from “Blackish,” a series. It was one of those things I didn’t pay attention to because as much as it was a common thing for someone to give you a curt nod in school, it was usually from a small place of familiarity. People you don’t know don’t give you a nod when you walk past them.

It’s a record to release an Afrobeats album at the age of 19. It is record breaking to release an Afrobeats album with zero features at the age of 19. Since Qing Madi broke into starlight in 2022, the young superstar has been charting a distinct path for herself, blending genres to find her own sound. In 2023, Qing Madi shared her first body, an extended version of herself eponymously titled “Qing Madi.” It was the first body of work that introduced us to the magic that the superstar would become.

There is a white voice, and I have it. I recently moved to England for my master’s degree, and six months in, I have realised that the foundations that once held my resolve against the anglicisation of my name and speech were built on muddy waters. When I arrived at border control, my voice was firm, and my confidence was high. I told the man my name and my purpose for coming to his country. I showed him papers, and for what it’s worth, my English was perfect.

The human condition, at its most vulnerable, is one of the most mind-altering aspects of life. As I am writing this, my first attempt at writing anything of note since the turn of the year, I am thinking about my friend who is suffering from a really uncomfortable pile – the seemingly easy process of defecating becomes painful and heartbreaking. I listen to him give me a breakdown of how much work he puts in to ensure that his next excrement is soft to make the process less painful.
