Nava Ramanan admits that when he first joined the Justice Digital team, a small change to its systems would take weeks and “cost so much money” once it had passed through various reviews and external partners.

Shopify’s CEO says that his employers must “demonstrate why they cannot get what they want done using AI” before they grow their teams. And the ecommerce company will also add “AI usage questions to our performance and peer review,” said CEO Tobi Lutke in an edict to staff. Shopify, which reported revenues of $8.8 billion in 2024, says it is using AI “to make customer communications more efficient” as well as to underpin its “Sidekick” commerce assistant for merchant-onboarding.

IBM’s z17 mainframe is here and, as teased, Big Blue is going big on AI – with an on-chip AI coprocessor to reduce latency for “in-transaction inferencing” and the ability to support small and large language models. Each system is powered by 32 of its Telum II processors, revealed last year. z17 inference capabilities are powered by IBM’s second-gen on-chip AI accelerator, with a new “Spyre” Accelerator set to provide additional capabilities via PCIe card when it launches at the end of this year.

The EU has joined the UK in poking the Big Tech bear on encryption backdoors with its ProtectEU security strategy, which outlined plans to allow law enforcement to access encrypted data. While not legislation in itself, the ‘European Internal Security Strategy’ laid out the commission’s security goals, including the launch of a new Cybersecurity Act to secure cloud and telecom services and an assessment of the EU’s data retention rules on encrypted content.
