We are ramping up our efforts to smash the people smuggling gangs at source.” Unsurprisingly, this incredibly insincere and misleading statement was bombarded with negative comments.

There are, of course, understandable reasons why right-wingers back Israel: the country is seen not merely as a Western ally, but as a plucky outpost of Western civilisation.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is now the second world leader that Trump has openly admonished in a White House press briefing (Volodymyr Zelensky being the first). Trump was asked by a journalist, “What will it take for you to be convinced that there’s no white genocide in South Africa?” And in response, he played a pre-planned video showing supposed evidence for the genocide, which Ramaphosa, like a schoolboy in detention, was made to sit and watch.

What effects does immigration have on society? Some are obvious and can be seen with the naked eye. Immigrants may look different. They may dress differently and have different habits. Other effects are less obvious and must be studied using social science. Do immigrants commit more or less crime than natives? Do they pay more in taxes than they take in public services? Do they shift the culture one way or the other? These questions are not straightforward to answer.
