HYDE PARK — Teens attending a “takeover” event Saturday in Hyde Park said the much-maligned gatherings are efforts to hang out with friends — and that attempts to police the teens or lower curfew laws won’t actually help the city’s youths. After a teen takeover failed to materialize Friday in River North, teens gathered Saturday along Hyde Park’s commercial corridors, where they were met by around 100 police officers.

HYDE PARK — Residents of Kenwood’s Indian Village met with local leaders Monday to protest the continued operation of a shelter for people experiencing homelessness. The former Best Western hotel, 4900 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive in Kenwood, opened last year as a shelter for asylum seekers and other unhoused migrants. The neighboring Lake Shore Hotel, also vacant, opened to migrants in late 2023 and closed in October.

For years, the Monadnock Regional School District left policies on student cellphone use to individual schools and teachers. But as phone use during the school day has risen, so has concern from teachers, administrators and parents, Superintendent Jeremy Rathbun said. “We're hearing it from all of our stakeholders — that we have to think about cellphone use during the school day,” Rathbun said.

With its first major structures completed, the Island Autism Group will welcome community members to an open house this Saturday to tour the West Tisbury campus that has been over a decade in the making. Island Autism has recently completed “phase one” of the project, executive director Kate DeVane said. The central “hub house,” a large, two-story building designed for school-age and adult programming, is finished and in daily use, Ms. DeVane said.
