RAPID RIVER — Main Street in Rapid River will be filled with vintage and antique snowmobiles this Friday, Jan. 24, and Saturday, Jan. 25, for the 19th annual Rapid River Relic Riders Annual Vintage and Antique Snowmobile Show and Swap. This year, the event features red, white, or blue sleds. Relic Riders, a non-profit, began in 2007 as a small group of snowmobile and sled enthusiasts but has grown into a huge event, drawing people from downstate Iowa, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and even Canada.

ESCANABA — It’s that time of year again; the ice has covered the Bays de Noc, and anglers are out braving the cold weather for a day or days of ice fishing. Whether it’s pike, walleye, or perch, anglers are having a great start to the season. “We got a really good start this year, and it’s went from the worst ice imaginable last year to the best; it’s really solid,” said Paul “Blade” Bloedorn, owner of Blade’s Bait and Tackle said. ESCANABA – A local school is working to get its band back together after a 20-plus-year hiatus. Holy Name Catholic School in Escanaba announced a fundraiser roughly three weeks ago to restart and revamp the Holy Name band program. Principal Nathan Vande Hey said the goal is to raise $80,000, and the school is nearly halfway there as funds sit at approximately $36,000. “We’ve had a tremendous response,” Vande Hey said.

ESCANABA — A group of local fiber artists meet once a month to create, share ideas and socialize at the Escanaba Library. Library Assistant and facilitator for the Fiber Arts group, Jane Lynch, said she follows other libraries across the country and found several of them have a group similar to what the Escanaba Library is doing now. “I had seen several places that had like a group like this, and I thought, I wonder if there’s an interest,” she said.

ESCANABA — Michigan State Police (MSP) Gladstone Post arrested two individuals on unrelated charges involving felony drug offenses and bringing contraband into a jail this week. The arrests were made within five hours of each other. On Wednesday, Jan. 8, around 5:40 p.m., a Gladstone Post trooper conduced a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling on 3rd Avenue North near North 30th Street in Escanaba. The trooper initiated the stop after observing a traffic violation.

ESCANABA — After a very successful fall semester at Bay College, administration expects the winter semester to follow suit. “This past fall semester was a huge success, I would say, for Bay College and our communities; it was the largest enrollment we’ve had since 2014,” said Bay Director of Admissions Jessica Beaver. Bay saw over 2,000 individuals enroll in the fall semester.
