Virtual production has exploded in popularity over the past few years, fueled by LED display technology and real-time game engine breakthroughs. Projects like The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have famously demonstrated the incredible potential of in-camera VFX with LED volumes. There’s certainly no sign of a slowdown in this trend, either.

Back in my last article on virtual production, we looked at this industry sector’s incredible growth over the last couple of years. In addition, we learned how complex virtual production workflows can be, and how this has led to a surge in demand for entirely new, highly-skilled positions. And we shouldn’t underestimate this demand for virtual production specialists, because it’s driven by a scarcity of qualified, experienced personnel.

Next month marks the 8th anniversary of Apple’s introduction of Final Cut Pro X. I won’t bother rehashing all the drama that surrounded it. Nor will I attempt to prove it’s a viable NLE worthy of it’s “Pro” moniker. Instead, I thought it would be an entertaining, perhaps even educational, and hopefully, an enlightening endeavor to investigate this topic from a unique point of view.
