I recently tried out the new Titan ControlMax 1650 18V backpack paint sprayer on a few different projects. The first test was spraying two backyard sheds, about 500 sq. ft. in total. I sprayed the sheds with Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint using the 515 tip that came with the machine. It pushed the product well, with an impressive lack of overspray thanks to the High Efficiency Airless technology.

When selecting a brush, you need to think about the substrate you’re painting and the size of the room. If you’re cutting walls in a big room, you want a larger brush that is about 2.5 or 3 in. in order to move a lot of paint around quickly. If you’re working in a smaller space or with a lot of inside corners, you want a smaller brush—2 in.—or an angled sash to really get in there.

When determining your roller nap length, start by looking at the substrate. If you are painting a coarse-textured surface such as a popcorn ceiling or stucco, you want a high-nap roller, either 3/4 in. or 1 in. The finished aesthetic doesn’t really matter in this case because the surface is already textured, so the goal is to apply as quickly as possible and get full coverage. On smoother surfaces such as drywall, however, the finished aesthetic does matter.
