Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! Download the app. I have tried dozens of different ski socks over the past four decades: ones that bunch in the boot, ones that slip down the calf, and ones that are either too thick or too thin.

My coffee pot is a relic: a glass, stovetop percolator that’s at least half a century old that rattles as it brews; though clean on the inside, the glass has a brown stain on the bottom that I just can’t scrub off. My bed frame had been previously owned by my wife’s aunt. My Scrabble board is held together with a piece of tape across its back. But the percolator still makes excellent coffee. The bed frame holds up the bed despite gravity’s best efforts.

But in the house, with a newly mobile baby, the standing boards would be a bit of a hazard. I needed to solve this problem.

I've been skiing and snowboarding for decades and taught my children how to do the winter sports. Make sure your layers are keeping you dry, and pay extra attention to your hands. Start on the bunny hill and work your way up — don't ski or board above your level. I've been skiing and snowboarding my whole life and even taught my children how. Every so often, while riding the chairlift, I look down upon some out-of-control skier in soaked-through jeans, a snow-flecked sweatshirt, and cotton gloves.
