The Iowa Grain Indemnity Fund Board voted Thursday to wind down the assessment on grain sold to Iowa-licensed grain dealers, as well as the participation fees for Iowa-licensed grain dealers and warehouse operators, on September 1, 2025. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Services (IDALS) announced the decision.

Recently imposed tariffs – some paused, some rescinded, some increased — have created even more uncertainty in the agriculture economy. The tariffs included reciprocal tariffs against a number of United States trade partners, and a number of tariff carve-outs, such as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) exemptions of 25% duties against our U.S. neighbors.

Iowa Republican Governor Kim Reynolds announced on social media Friday that she will not be seeking another term in the farm state’s lead office. Reynolds ascended to the position of governor in 2017 after then-Gov. Terry Branstad took a job with the first Trump Administration as ambassador to China. Reynolds helped introduce the first E15 Access Standard in the U.S. in 2022, a law which enabled Iowans access to ethanol at a reduced price to regular gas.

Hours after a promised run of “reciprocal” tariffs went into effect on Wednesday, President Donald Trump put a 90-day pause on some of the duties via a post on Truth Social. In the post, he also upped tariffs on China from the previously planned 104% to 125%. The additional tariffs came after China announced 50% retaliatory duties on U.S. imports, which will go into effect Tuesday.

To date, more than 168.3 million reported birds have been affected by HPAI since February 2022, with cases found in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. Cases slowed down significantly for most of 2024, but have risen since the start of November. Cases have continued to appear in the opening months of 2025. The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has reported 43 new cases of Highly Pathological Avian Influenza (HPAI) over 18 different states in the past 30 days.
