I'm pulled from sleep as the soft melody of my alarm clock goes off a bit too early for my taste. Rolling over, I see that it's 4:50 AM. I want to go back to bed, but, "If you want a job as a software developer, you have to put in the work," I tell myself. After I drag myself out of bed and the coffee is brewing, I pull out my phone to find some blog posts. "Use every spare moment to learn," I think as I scroll through the articles.

The backend of my application is complete! And with that, the whole application is done! (ish)Why do I say ish? Becuase, its time to move out of the initial build phase, and into deployment. This is an exciting milestone, but its a hard one for me to jump into becuase there’s so many things that I’d still like to do on the application.

The majority of the work today has been continuations of work from yesterday, just implementing business logic on the routes of my application. So, I figured I’d take a break from writing about that to talk about three functions that I’ve created to do very specific things in my application. What's a utils folder? This is the directory where you put all of your little functions that have a hard time finding a home, but your application couldn’t live without them.

I’ve been logging my progress (almost) daily on my new side-project Roast, an app to help me track my home roasts. For the past couple of days, I’ve been singing the praises of Swagger and OpenAPI and the ability to automatically generate a server.

As I said yesterday, Swagger is a super helpful tool for auto-generating your API, however, it is not a silver bullet. There’s still a fair amount of work to do, and there’s not a ton of documentation on how the pre-built API chooses to handle its data!So, today, I’m going to walk through how I got one of my routes totally up and running as expected! To connect my front end interface to the database, I need to design an API to allow the frontend application to retrieve and send data. This will enable my user logic, like creating accounts, signing in and out, etc. It will enable all the logic around roasts. I've created an Express API before, but this time I wanted to see if I could learn a bit more about Swagger in the build process.
