    The police team investigating the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, told Parliament on Tuesday they have been unable to speak to the victim. The alleged victim’s mother has refused access so that police can take down statements from the girl, known publicly as Cwecwe, SAPS deputy national commissioner Tebello Mosikili told Parliament’s police portfolio committee on Tuesday. Social workers have not been able to provide psycho-social support, Mosikili said.

    People marched through the streets of Matatiele in the Eastern Cape and Johannesburg’s city centre on Tuesday, calling for justice for a seven-year-old known only as “Cwecwe” who was raped in the Eastern Cape in October. This follows days of protests and outrage across the country. In December the child’s mother accused the police of being slow to act after the child was raped. The child was a learner at Bergview College, a private school in Matatiele.

    Still no arrests after seven-year-old raped in Eastern Cape in October Hundreds of students and learners marched in Cape Town and Durban on Tuesday calling for justice for a seven-year-old who was raped in the Eastern Cape last October. In December the child’s mother had accused the police of being slow to act after the child was raped. The child was a learner at Bergview College, a private school in Matatiele. There is no confirmation that the child was raped at the school.

    Water in Bonkolo Dam is below abstraction level. Komani, South Africa (24 January 2025) — People in Komani in the Eastern Cape have welcomed the help of Gift of the Givers delivering water. The humanitarian aid organisation arrived on Tuesday with four water tankers and bottled water donated by Cerebos. They were welcomed by smiling residents. JoJo Tanks has donated 17 5,000-litre tanks. Since October, the town has been facing severe water challenges.

    People in Komani, Eastern Cape, say they experience persistent water outages. As school opened this week, many learners did not attend as they were unable to bathe in the morning or had to go to queue for water for their families. Water outages started in September last year and now last for weeks at a time. Chris Hani District Municipality spokesperson Thobeka Mqamelo said 14 wards are affected.
