    Sitting in a waiting room at the hospital for eye problems, I listened to two strangers waiting behind me. I can’t see anything and so listening is all I can do that is stimulating. Within a volley of a few sentences, the strangers lament the state of the United States and notably, it’s unhinged, fascist, freakshow leader Donald Trump. This isn’t bizarre. Donald Trump is on the lips of most people who I eavesdrop on these days (yes, even when I can see and I have no excuse to do this).

    Twitter is nearly dead to me but from time to time, I log in to check my messages. This Substack is reader-supported. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Yesterday I do this and I find a message that calls me “truly evil.” My evilness is linked to four tweets that I wrote seven years ago that stated something obvious and objectively true. I wasn’t going to start piece this by mentioning that.

    When I ask Reem Al-Buhaisi how many of her family members have been killed in Israel’s assault on Gaza since October 7, 2023, she doesn’t answer with a number. Instead, she recalls the deaths chronologically: her uncle, a cousin, and his daughter were killed on October 12, 2023, in an Israeli airstrike outside the family home. In March 2024, a cousin who volunteered with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society was shot and killed as Israel laid siege to the Al-Amal hospital.

    On March 10, Mark Carney became the new leader of the Liberal Party, and four days later, the sitting prime minister until the upcoming election on April 28. Carney received nearly 86 per cent of leadership votes, trouncing runner-up Chrystia Freeland, who secured just 8 per cent. In every riding association across the country, Liberal members broke decidedly for the former central banker.
